Symptoms of a Virus and Spyware Infection

 

Normally, your antivirus security software should have caught any virus before it was allowed to infect your computer.
For whatever reason it failed to do so, your computer is now infected.


So what are symptoms of an virus infected computer?
(You could have one or more of the following indications):

  • You notice your computer really slows down.
  • Your start up and shut down also takes more time.
  • Your computer restarts on it's own.
  • You suddenly have warning error messages that appear frequently.
  • You hear sounds and music playing randomly.
  • Your computer fails to boot up..
  • You noticed that some of your files and folders no longer exist.
  • Program applications start up without you requesting it.
  • You notice files with names you don't recognize.
  • Your available RAM memory is now less than what it used to be.
  • You cannot access your HD, or any other external drives.


The following are symptoms of a computer infected with spyware.

  • You could have any of the problems associated with a virus infection above, plus:
  • A new unknown Icon appears in your Windows System Tray (lower right corner of your desktop).
  • Your computer restarts on it's own.
  • Your fire wall shows that traffic is leaving your computer when you not doing anything online..
  • Your browser has a new toolbar installed without your knowledge or permission.
  • Whenever you type in a URL address in the browser, you end up at another website..
  • Your browser homepage is changed without your knowledge or permission.
  • Your browser has new unknown favorites added to your favorites folder.
  • As you surf the internet, you are barraged with pop up ads.
  • Your family and friends receive email that you did not send, you also notice bounced back email in your in box.


Actually you should already be performing a malware scan weekly as part of your PC maintenance schedule.  In any case, once you suspect you have an infection, immediately run a virus/spyware scan.

You can find free scanners on the web or look at the the Security Download page of this website for free antivirus/antispyware software, that scans and will remove most of these intruders.

Note: If your computer keeps hanging up, or you cannot boot up, or your computer runs so slow it is impossible to accomplish and task, you will have to operate from the Safe Mode.
