Does Your Computer Run at a Snail's Pace?
The following bugs could cause your computer to run at a snail's pace. Now if your computer takes forever to startup into ready mode, I have a separate page dedicated to this problem.
Here are some reasons why your computer is slow:
1) Your computer could be infected with Malware (virus/spyware) which use up your resources (memory), RAM, and can clog up your your internet connection (spyware).
2) Are you running more than one firewall and antivirus program? Use only one, they could be conflicting with each other, causing poor performance.
3) You could have a fragmented and overfilled Registry due to:
-Uninstalled programs that leave leftover files in the registry (in other words the uninstall doesn't cleanup itself).
-Temporary files not cleaned up, it just keeps growing.
Caution: always backup your registry before cleaning or optimizing your registry, most registry software allow for backups.
4) Disc Cleanup - removes all the clutter caused by obsolete files, left over files from uninstall's, temp files and internet files. This action will free up your Hard Drive. If this maintenance routine is not done periodically, these files will keep building up which will affect the speed and performance of your computer. Two ways to clean up these orphaned files:
a) Use one of the free third party software's found on the Maintenance Download page.
b) Use the Windows Disc Cleanup Tool: Open My Computer Icon > right click on Local Drive C > click on Properties >
Click General > Click Disk Cleanup Now.

Next you can choose what folders you want to clean out or leave alone.
Now click OK.
5) Hard Drive full - some say you should have at least 40mb free space on your HD before you start to notice decrease in performance. Here are some the reasons that a full HD can cause your PC to stagger in speed:
-Virtual memory uses space on your HD when the RAM is full. It cannot use the HD if it is full.
-Transfer rate is quicker on the outside of the HD disc (platter), and slower toward the inner disc area (center). So as you fill up your HD, you will progressively move toward the inner or slower area of the disc. Note: But on some computers, it is random, not necessarily outer to inner fill.
-Web browsers need the HD to store temporary internet files, if there is no space on the HD for these files, you will notice a decrease performance of your internet surfing experience.he free maintenance software into seven categories:
6) Hard Drive not defragmented - if you have never defragged your HD, than this could be a serious issue if applications take longer to function. Because your files are literally scattered all over you HD, it takes longer to find the necessary files that are required for optimal performance. Defragging a HD will place all your files in a proper order and sequence. Two ways to defrag your HD:
a) Use a free third party defrag software located on the Maintenance Download page.
b) Use the Windows Defragmentation feature: Open My Computer Icon > right click on Local Drive C > click on Properties >
Click Tools Tab > Defragmentation Icon click Defrag Now.

In the Disk Deframenter, make sure the C drive is highlighted, than click Defragment. Note: this may take a few hours, especially if you never ran a Defrag before.

7) Insufficient Pagefile - this problem only pertains to computers who have insufficient RAM. In a nutshell, when RAM becomes full, it turns to the HD for help, using a contiguous, empty space, to use (pagefile). If this temporary source of memory does not have enough space, performance suffers. Pagefile can be adjusted.
8) Antivirus software that are resource hogs - some older security suites software use up so much memory, that you will notice a slow down of your computer after installation. I had this problem, after uninstalling them, my computer was back to running at it's happy flank speed.
9) Overheating - can cause your processor speed to slow down. Is your desktop tower stored in a confined space where there is no ventilation? Maybe the inside of your computer is caked with dust preventing proper heat transfer, or your fan vents are plugged with dust. Another possibility is that your fan is burned out and not operating. Check it out, see if you can feel air flowing.
10)
Your computer to old - insufficient ram and memory, processor is to slow, aged components. Maybe it's time to get a new machine.
Note: If your computer runs very slow, you may have to get into Safe Mode to scan, clean and tuneup your computer.
In safe mode, your computer will run faster, because you are only using the minimum or basic files and drivers.
