Ransomeware - Malware
Ransomware is computer malware which holds a computer system, or the data it contains, hostage against its user by demanding a ransom for its restoration. The attacker demands some sort of monetary payment usually by having the funds sent via an online currency such as eGold or Webmonkey. In return, the attacker sends back an encryption code to restore the computer and files back to it's owner.
It is believed you can become a vulnerable by either accessing dangerous websites, such as illegal porn sites, or possibly through email attachments.
Security experts say that some attacks are really a bluff, the malware itself is not programmed to delete or encrypt anything. It more of a scare tactic to exhort money (cyber crime).
Stay Protected
- Keep you OS, security software, and browser updated.
- Always have a real time antivirus/antispyware program running.
- Some experts also recommend a pop-up blocker.
