Last Known Good Configuration

There is some confusion over the differences between Last Know Good Configuration (LKGC) and System Restore. Basically, they both restore your computer to a previous state when everything was working flawlessly.

Differences:

LKGC -

-Only the system registry and driver settings are restored from your last time your computer started sucessfully.
-You can use LKGC even if your computer does not start, because you access Safe Mode to select LKGC.
-Cannot correct corrupt drivers.
-Each time when your system boots up successfully, the previous LKGC is replaced the most recent successful boot up.

System Restore -

A snapshot is taken of the registry, drivers, all system files, and desktop.
-Your computer must be able to start (boot up) to use System Restore.
-Can roll back to drivers to previous state, because a snapshot was taken.

How to start Last Known Good Configuration

To access Safe Mode (Me, 2000, XP, Vista, Win 7):
1) Start computer
2) As the computer begins to boot up, hold down the F8 key.
3) The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears.
4) Select the Last Known Good Configuration option.
5) Press ENTER

Your computer should start up and begin to load Windows.

In most cases, your computer should be back to where you were, before the problem.

Note: Remember, LKGC does not repair the problem. It only allows your computer to start up so you can troubleshoot the problem.
