Computer Maintenance and Tuneup

Tweaking Your Computer

Maintenance & Diagnostic software to fine tune your PC:
Here you will find free maintenance software for your computer.
You will find listed, most of the free software offered by vendors. These programs are not gimmicks, they do work, some more proficient than others. Since these vendors do offer free software, I will not publicly negatively comment on them. To test these software, I have tried them on my computers and other computers I have worked on . And I have had no complaints from the users.

Why we do we need to perform periodic computer maintenance? Better yet, let me reword the question: What if you fail to accomplish periodic maintenance?
Here are some basics:

Do we really need "oil changes"?

  • I assume that most of you change the oil in your automobile, and at the required maintenance time, also get a tune up so your car will get the best mileage possible and run like a swiss watch. So why not do the same for your computer?
  • Maybe at times you see the dreaded "blue screen of death." Or suddenly it takes forever to accomplish anything on your computer, because it runs at a snails pace. How about one of the most frustrating actions, "computer freeze." Many of these issues could have been avoided. But don't loose hope, you can still get your machine back to how it was, when it was brand new.
  • So how often do you perform maintenance? Basically, it depends on how often the computer is used. Let's use the automobile as an example again. Engine oil is
suppose to be changed every 3,000 miles. Now, some drivers may hit this mark in 2
months, for others, their odometers may not read 3,000 miles for a whole year.
As a benchmark, I suggest accomplishing maintenance weekly. I assume most
of you turn on your computers daily, to check email, surf the web, watch a movie,
or do your homework. So once a week is not asking much.
  • If your computer is the "workhorse" for your business or in the family, it will require
more maintenance. There will be more unused files left behind from surfing the
internet, uninstalling programs, crashes, improper shutdowns, as some of the
reasons for building up temporary files. These nuisance files will continue to keep
building up, resulting in a slow computer.
  • Does your computer take forever to start up? Maybe your start up files are loaded with programs that use all your memory, and the end result is, a computer that takes forever to start up. If this is your situation, your start up programs need to be pruned out. There is a way to clean this out using MSCONFIG, but to make it effortless, some of the recommended software listed here can help you clear out the clutter.

Here are some hints when using these software:
  • Most of these free software are simple to use. Others are more involved and is not for the novice. I separated the software according to this criteria for the non-technical minded and to keep it simple. The basic applications have all the modules built into the program, so you just sit back and let it clean and tune up your computer.
  • Unlike security software (antivirus), you can use as many programs as you want. You will find that a second program will find additional errors that the first program missed.
  • Since these programs are free, some software may not have automatic updates. In other words you may have to manually download the updates - in most cases there is a update link to click on.
  • The registry software listed is the safe, user friendly programs. There are applications that go deeper into the registry for a more complete optimization, but there is a word of caution here. Sometimes the corrupt files that they highlight, may be files that you require. If you delete these, than you may be worse off than when you started performing the cleaning process (a computer tech will recognize these files). But you don't have to worry, the software listed on the download page is tested as safe, even for the novice.
  • If you have never performed a Hard Drive defrag and optimization, you will find that it may run for 4 or even 5 hours, depending on the size of your hard drive and how any files you have stored on it. That is another reason you should frequently run maintenance on your computer. You will find that a computer that is clean and regularly maintained, will get through the maintenance procedures quickly.
