So what is a smartphone?
In simple terms, a smartphone is a cell phone with a mini laptop computer built into it.
Or, a mini laptop with a cell phone, that fits in your pocket. It is a device that not only can make and receive phone calls, but is a mobile pocket size computer that you can take with you.
Why?
- Business Purposes: read/compose email, create documents, check your calendar appointments/events, view stock reports.
- Pleasure: surf the web, play games, watch movies, keep up with sporting events, read ebooks.
- Routines: check weather reports, access Facebook and Twitter accounts, GPS services.
There are a lot more functions available, but I think you now get the idea. Basically having your desktop computer in your pocket, purse or clipped to your belt.
Just think of the times when you can use it:
- Waiting in line at the movies.
- Sitting in a waiting room for your appointment.
- Riding on a bus or airplane.
- At a coffee shop or having lunch.
Of course not everyone really needs a smartphone. A simple basic cell phone would suffice for most people. Besides the extra cost of the phone and its monthly data costs can add up.
So What is a dumb phone?
When a smartphone doesn't do what is suppose to do. When the smartphone drops calls, freezes, can't connect to the web, operates super slow, you loose all your emails, the touch screen doesn't function as it should, battery dies (forgot to charge it) and on and on.
Actually calling your phone device a dumbphone is kind of a nice negative statement.
I have heard people yell at their phone or use other words which I cannot print here.
So welcome to the High Tech World we live in. Nothing is perfect.
How About Tablets?
Basically, larger than a smartphone, anywhere from 7" to 10" screens, without the phone capability. Or to explain it another way, a small laptop without the physical keyboard, so has no hinge for the screen, but is built like a slate. They make use of touchscreens instead and usually use the same OS as the smartphones.
